E.L Haynes Public Charter School was founded in 2004 and has an award-winning program based on effective practices for advancing student achievement. E.L. Haynes is named for Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes - the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics and a DC public school teacher for 47 years. E.L. Haynes is among the top-performing charter schools in Washington D.C. and is recognized locally and nationally as a model and for our exceptional student achievement gains. E.L. Haynes currently serves nearly 1,200 students in grades PreK-12th.

 

Our Mission 

Every E.L. Haynes student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice.  Every E.L. Haynes student will be adept at mathematical reasoning, will use scientific methods effectively to frame and solve problems, and will develop the lifelong skills needed to be successful individuals, active community members, and responsible citizens. 


Special Education Teacher Responsibilities

  • Develop Individualized Student Programs (IEP) for students; maintain compliance with all federal regulations and state policies regarding the education of students with disabilities.
  • Maintain a caseload of students with identified special needs that are aligned with E.L. Haynes rigorous learning standards.
  • Assist students, families, and staff in understanding students’ exceptionalities so that all can advocate for and support students’ achievement of their academic, behavioral, and social goals.
  • Embrace E. L. Haynes Educational Program; Ensure access to core content areas—language arts, math, science, and social studies.
  • Measure student progress toward state and national standards.
  • Ensure appropriate accommodations to the curriculum, lessons and learning environment. Instruction may be provided within the general classroom setting, within a tailored instructional classroom, resource setting, and/or small classroom setting.

 Teacher Responsibilities 

  • Command of grades/subject-specific content and theoretical knowledge of learning theory with the ability to teach higher-level math content.
  • Plan and deliver exceptional instruction aligned to E. L. Haynes’ rigorous academic standards, assessments, student assessment data, and E. L. Haynes curriculum framework.
  • Conduct and organize on-going assessments of student performance using multiple assessment tools including standardized tests, performance assessments, anecdotal records, homework and individualized assessments as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with lead co-teacher, ELL teachers, teaching and grade-level teams and other staff, especially instructional support team, to plan, share student work and ensure that instruction is aligned with identified curriculum and standards.
  • Provide direct support to students in a classroom by delivering instruction and ensuring learning through a variety of co-teaching models and strategies.
  • Design scaffolded activities and differentiated lessons so that all students may access the curriculum and benefit from the educational experience.
  • Remediate skill deficits without compromising the curricular program.
  • Differentiate formative assessments (independent practice, homework, exit tickets, etc.)
  • Create a classroom culture and environment that demonstrates the E. L. Haynes Promise by consistently modeling the promise, practicing Responsive Classroom techniques, displaying recent high-quality student work, and maintaining a classroom that is designed and organized for maximal student learning.
  • Integrate developmentally appropriate, culturally competent, research-based strategies into teaching and assessment practices.
  • Create and assess standards-based intellectual and relational connections across difference.
  • Engage parents and families in their students’ academic success. 
  • Be an active member of the E. L. Haynes Professional Learning Community.
  • Contribute to the productivity of the school as a whole.
  • Attend and participate in school events outside of regular school hours.

We are looking for candidates who embody the following values and characteristics:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in special education or equivalent. Exceptional candidates who do not have a master’s degree may be considered.
  • One or more years of special education and/or general education teaching experience at the middle school level.
  • Special Education certification or enrollment in a certification program is preferred.
  • Experience with both resource/self-contained and inclusion environments preferred.
  • Experience working with students with a wide range of disabilities preferred.
  • Experience working with EasyIEP required.
