ABOUT

E.L. Haynes Public Charter School was founded in 2004 and has an award-winning program based on effective practices for advancing student achievement. E.L. Haynes is named for Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes - the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics and a DC public school teacher for 47 years. E.L. Haynes is among the top-performing charter schools in Washington D.C., and is recognized locally and nationally as a model as well as for our exceptional student achievement gains. E.L. Haynes currently serves nearly 1,200 students in grades PreK-12.


OUR MISSION
Every E.L. Haynes student of every race, socioeconomic status, ability level, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice.  Every E.L. Haynes student will be adept at mathematical reasoning, will use scientific methods effectively to frame and solve problems, and will develop the lifelong skills needed to be successful individuals, active community members, and responsible citizens. 

 

JOB OVERVIEW

Applicants must be able to work from 4:00-6:00 PM (after-care) Monday through Thursday, and 1:30-6:00 PM on Fridays. This position is school-year only and has the option to be extended to cover Summer Intersession, when needed.

 

The E.L. Haynes Year-Round Program is designed to allow students to explore traditional subjects from new perspectives. Extended Day and Intersession courses covered can vary weekly and is a space where experiential and project-based learning takes place for all students. We seek applicants with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for working with students. Our teaching fellows must be committed to personal growth and comfortable working in a fast­ paced, collaborative environment. E.L. Haynes Public Charter School, located in Northwest Washington, D.C., is seeking dynamic individuals to fill positions in our exceptional Extended Day Program. Positions are ideal for creative, organized, and enthusiastic individuals seeking a career in education or those who have a deep interest in, love for, and commitment to working with children 5th through 8th grade.

 

TIME COMMITMENT: Positions are part-time, totaling at least 12 hours per week. Employees of the Year-Round Program are required to after-care 4:00-6:00 PM Monday-Friday and after-care 1:30-6:00 PM on Friday.

 

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred applicants will have some college experience, child­ care experience, lesson-planning/evaluation experience, and a strong interest in education and/or child development. Candidates seeking education-based degrees (BA of Teaching, school counseling, curriculum development) are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: E.L. Haynes PCS YRP Teaching Tutors are responsible for:

  • Supporting homework completion in the areas of math, science, writing, literature 
  • Collaborate with colleagues in a challenging, fun, and supportive environment
  • Prioritizing the safety and well-being of our students
  • Hone time management and project planning by submitting lesson plans in a timely manner
  • Communicate incidents and other pertinent information to the YRP Manager in a timely manner
  • Proactively adhere to policies and procedures, making the safety and care of students the primary focus
  • Conduct yourself professionally, as each YRP team member represents our school to other staff, parents, students, and visitors
  • Actively participate in staff meetings and professional development initiatives as required
  • Other duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Some college experience preferred
  • At least one year's experience working with children in a childcare, educational or camp setting; tutoring and coaching experience is acceptable
  • Experience planning and implementing group activities
  • Ability to model and demonstrate behaviors that foster a caring, respectful, and responsible community
  • CPR Certified preferred
  • DC Mandated Reporter certificate
  • Mandatory background check (reimbursable) 
  • TB skin testing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stand and sit for sustained periods of time
  • See and read a computer screen and printed materials
  • Move throughout the school, including ascending and descending stairs
  • Be able to pick up 5-25

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
