Founded in 2004 and named for the first African-American woman to earn her Ph.D. in Mathematics, the award-winning E.L. Haynes Public Charter School serves more than 1,135 students in grades Pre-K3 through  12th grade. E.L. Haynes operates two campuses in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC, and offers a rigorous educational program designed to prepare students to succeed in the college of their choice.

E.L. Haynes provides a rigorous and engaging college preparatory curriculum for students in grades Pre-K through 12. About the Position:

 

The Multilingual Learner (MLL) Specialist collaborates with campus leadership teams and the Academic Support Team (AST) to support teachers in delivering effective MLL instruction. This includes individual and group teacher development focusing on expanding and refining their understanding of research-based instruction, particularly emphasizing the SIOP model. The MLL Specialist is responsible for ensuring that services comply with federal and local laws and policies, coordinating services and testing accommodations, and organizing and analyzing student data to improve the MLL program's effectiveness. This is a 12-month position reporting to the Senior Director of Student Support Services.

 

Starting Salary: $73,696 - $97,570

 

You Will:  

 

Support MLL Instructional Programming:

• Provide coaching and consultation to MLL teachers throughout the year;
• Model and support teachers to deliver evidence-based and effective instructional strategies that support language acquisition;
• Review unit and weekly plans for alignment with coaching goals, content, effective scaffolding, and the implementation of SIOP strategies;
• Establish and lead cycles of goal setting, lesson planning, content knowledge development, observations, student work analysis, and feedback with teachers;
• Plan and facilitate campus-based and school-wide MLL team meetings and professional development for MLL teachers;
• Monitor and support Newcomer programming and English Language Development (ELD ) classes;
• Collect and organize student achievement and language acquisition data, attendance, behavioral incident, and special education referral data for MLL students and student MLL program exit rates;
• Support instruction and assessment of students as needed (e.g., facilitating ACCESS testing, facilitating small group interventions to further support academic recovery, participating in grade-level planning meetings, supporting the administration of DC CAPE for students, etc.);
• Work with the data and assessment team to ensure that school-wide data collection systems meet the needs of MLL student data collection;
• Share data summary and analysis regularly with the Senior Director of Student Support Services, school principals, and other instructional leaders;
• Participate in weekly instructional leadership team (ILT) meetings to promote and evaluate the effectiveness of MLL programming; and
• Design and deliver professional development sessions to teachers and staff.
  

Oversee compliance, identi?cation, and assessments: 

• Oversee the MLL student identi?cation process;
• Coordinate MLL screening and ACCESS testing;
• Assign and maintain MLL testing accommodations for all assessments;
• Maintain & share accurate student databases with English proficiency levels, including Monitored students;
• Coordinate the creation and dissemination of MLL service letters for families;
• Coordinate the MLL progress reporting process;
• Monitor and support the implementation of individualized MLL student services; and
• Complete all paperwork and reports requested by OSSE and PCSB within their timelines.

 

You have: 

 

• 5-7 years of MLL teaching experience in a racially, culturally, and socio-economically diverse school;
• A deep knowledge and understanding of second language acquisition and teaching strategies for MLL students;
• A deep knowledge of K-12 grade-level standards and a clear understanding of standards-based curriculum and standards-based assessment;
• Demonstrated track record of success in ensuring all students achieve ambitious academic goals;
• A track record of building effective and student-centered relationships with colleagues; 
• A growth mindset that recognizes students (and families) are capable of engaging with grade-level standards and rigorous content;
• Used models and exemplars to drive instruction;
• Knowledge of effective adult learning strategies and techniques;
• A proven ability to lead through influence rather than authority;
• Skills at empathizing, listening, and building trusting relationships that support colleague growth and development;
• Expertise in building a positive and supportive classroom culture and productive rapport with staff, students, and families;
• Strong communication, project management, and collaboration skills to ensure student and team success; and
• Full COVID-19 vaccination.

 

You may also have: 

• An advanced degree or certification in MLL instruction or a related program; and
• Experience with Whetstone, Canvas, Nearpod, Zoom, and other educational technology.
